Red Dirt

Oh girl dancin down those dirty and dusty trails… –B-52’s, Roam

When I was in grade school, there was a boy who would tease me about being from the ranch*, even though I wasn’t.
“How can you tell Josie lives on a ranch?” he’d ask his friends loud enough so I could hear.
“Because she paints her fingernails red to hide the RED DIRT under her nails!”
“Because she wears red corduroy to hide the RED DIRT STAINS on her pants!”
And the boys would laugh and laugh.
Boys are mean.
But I guess they’re only mean if they like you because a year later he asked me to the school dance.
I said yes.
And I wore a red corduroy dress.
He never teased me again.

*Typical Guam ranches (at least the ones I know) are secluded plots in the jungle or by the beach where people gather under a wood and tin canopy or makeshift shelter to hang out and barbecue and whatever.
