Tech Thoughts

Goodbye Firefox, hello Camino.
I’ve been running Camino a week now and it has not crashed once, not even when visiting the sites that are prone to crashing my former favorite, Firefox. One of the things I LOVE about Camino is not only are you able to block pop-ups, you can also block web advertising (not all, but a lot of it). Makes browsing ad-saturated sites enjoyable again. And it’s fast, baby.
In other news, there’s some buzz going around about a couple of lifelong Mac gurus switching to pcs running Ubuntu Linux. A very interesting topic that had me thinking. For one thing, I’d love a nice MacBook Pro, but why on earth does it have to cost three grand (ordering to my specs)? As far as software goes, I don’t use Safari or any of the iLife stuff…in fact, other than the operating system, I don’t really use much ‘built-in’ Apple software. So what am I really paying for?
Anyway, it’s not likely I’ll be making a switch anytime soon seeing as my field of work is totally dominated by Mac, but it is good to know that there are options for people who are seeking a less expensive non-Microsoft alternative to Apple. I will remember this when it’s time to shop around for a replacement for my iBook.

Why not try dual booting your iBook to see if you like Linux? Probably the same reason I don’t do it: fear of not getting it right and having a crippled computer.
Such is the power of the penguin.

Yes for that reason exactly. It’s worth looking into though. I’ll consult my personal Mac gurus and see what they say.

I’ve been using Camino for a while now; Firefox was just too slow and buggy for me on my Mac. You need to install Camitools and Camiscript to really make Camino sing. Check out Pimp my Camino for all the goodies.
