On Where My Heart Is

My visit to Hawaii will be remembered as the trip of many “firsts.” My first Jamba Juice, my first Jack in the Box, my first Cheesecake Factory, my first Old Navy in-store visit, and my first Apple store experience. Hawaii was a lot of fun. Next time I go, I think I’ll bypass Honolulu entirely and venture out to the other islands, particularly Maui or Kauai since I haven’t been to those. Honolulu is crowded and touristy, a little too much for my taste. But the real point of the trip was to visit with friends and that’s what we did for the most part so I can’t complain.
I’ve traveled to a good number of places, both foreign and domestic, and there are two places I’ve been to where after just a few days I felt that I could relocate there. One is Japan…it doesn’t matter where in Japan. I’ve been to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and for a day, Nagoya. I could live in any of those cities. I totally dig Japan and feel at home there. The other place is Australia, particularly around the Cairns area, perhaps somewhere along the Great Greenway. And although I’ve never been to London, I get the feeling I could live there, too.
I love everything about traveling. I love packing, checking in at the airport, I even love plane food. I love getting lost in foreign countries, and I love experiencing cultures that are so different from what I know of my own. In the end, though, what I love most about traveling is coming home. I love the little island I’m from, despite its problems and bullshit. I can’t imagine I’ll ever feel differently. This is where I’m from. This is where my roots run deep. This is where I want to make a difference in ways I am able.
It’s good to be home.

On this trip it was. I didn’t do half the things in Hawaii that were suggested to me; there wasn’t enough time.
San Francisco is still on my short list of must-visit places. 🙂
