Can You Hear Me Now?

I was introduced to the CEO of a successful local company. Though I’d never met The Man before, his reputation as a tough & rough around the edges businessman preceded him. I attempted to make small talk, something I’m not particularly good at, but everything I said was followed by a gruff and increasingly annoyed, “What did you say?”
To make matters worse, as much as I strained to hear his words over the rumble of dozens other conversations in the room, I had to constantly ask him to repeat himself because I couldn’t hear him. To a casual observer it might have appeared as though we were teaching each other how to speak the english language with all the parroting going on.
Finally I sucked it up and told him, “Sir, you’ll need to speak up because I can’t hear in my left ear.”
Imagine my surprise when he broke into a grin and said, “And you, young lady, will have to speak up because I can’t hear in my right ear!”
We laughed and laughed. To solve the problem I moved and stood beside him on his left so that our “good” ears were next to each other–my right to his left. And from then on we talked like old friends.

Sounds most conversations with my boss…except for the part where we both laugh and start talking like old friends.
