Brown Tree Snake

062005
In the fifteen+ years I’ve lived on Guam, this is probably the fourth or fifth brown tree snake I’ve ever seen. And with the exception of the one I saw in a cage at the zoo, all the others were roadkill. I guess that’s why I find it very hard to believe that some estimate the BTS population on Guam to be as high as 13,000 per square mile. That’s a freaking lot of snakes.

and for all the hashing i did in the boonies, i never saw a snake. unless our snake expert was with us and he’d reach in to the brush and pull one out…..

I can’t count on both hands the number of snakes we found in our house or in the toolshed or the shaping room over a 15 year period. Katsu actually fashioned a snake-catching tool to use which facilitated catching them. It was quite ingenious and after they were caught, a nice sharp machete would take care of the rest. Still creeps me out though to see a picture.

I thank my lucky stars I’ve not had the same experiences you’ve had, Gail! Katsu’s invention sounds like something Addi would fashion if that were to ever be the case for us. Which I hope never is, of course.
Any problems with the brown tree snake in Hawaii?

I’m not into animal cruelty but snakes are the exception. Try snipping the head of live brown tree snake with a pair of tree pruners and pour gasoline on the snakes body. Throw a lit match on it afterwards to put it out of its misery! Am I scaring you guys with this?

  6. Josie says:

Oh yes, Michelle, that snake is a goner.
Sean, I think killing them with a machete is fine, but hey, whatever makes your boat float (and keeps the population down)!

  7. Gail says:

I thought the same thing – that Addi would fashion a similar device if the need ever arose – heaven forbid.
We had a scare on Maui a few months ago where they actually flew in experts from Guam to help search for the snake. It was never confirmed and never found. They take the threat very seriously here and are always looking for more money to fund the BTS interdiction campaign.

HOLY CRAP JOSIE. I’m extremely terrified of snakes and had to run away from the computer… go behind it and hit the scroll down just to move that away. Ewww..
