You're backing out of a parking space and you hit a parked car. It's early afternoon and you're not drunk, you just didn't see the car. You see you've left a pretty big dent in the driver's door of the car you hit, but your car is fine. There is absolutely no one around and there are no security cameras around the building.

Let's say you have insurance, but if you file a claim you'll have to pay several hundred dollars out of pocket in order to meet your deductible. You really can't afford that.

What do you do? Honestly. Do you stay and try to find the owner of the parked car? Do you leave a note? Do you drive away?

Contact the Driver or leave a note. Honesty is the best policy, and knowing is half the battle. Go Joe!

dude, i've been hit while i was parked and i've experienced both: not being informed and someone leaving a note. the latter is better.

Depending on where you are, it might not be possible to locate the driver. If it's a relatively small building with few offices, I'd probably try to contact the driver. Otherwise, the note gets my vote.

no question. leave a note. golden rule.

Oh, and just an after thought about the note: (1) it lets you contact the person without an immediate confrontation about the damage you've done, and (2) if after you've left the note and something happens(the driver didn't see it, or the wind blew it away, etc), you can FEEL good about acting responsible without really facing consequences. No judgement... just an observation.

It's not worth the permanent scar on your karma to just leave.

i have been hit and have done the hitting. thank goodness there were notes in both cases. im no good with guilt. i mean - this is guam - i would DIE if i ever saw that car again and i had not left a note.

yeah, i would totally leave a note of somekind... unless i knew it was someone's car, i just didn't like ... then i would probably just drive away..

Cool. I'd leave a note, too.

A co-worker's car got hit in the parking lot recently and the jerk just left. Was just wondering what the majority would do. :)

I'd leave a note. It would say something like...

"Sorry I hit your car... you should have insurance for situations exactly like this... please forgive me... Anonymous"

LOL. I'd leave a proper note.

Leave a note for sure ~ can't mess with car-karma.

I accidently backed into a car when we lived in Germany. It was minimal damage to the bumper and OF COURSE I couldn't just leave. It was not an American car (you can tell by the license plates) so I had to find someone to write the note in German. Then when they called they didn't speak any English. In my very limited German, I told them I would have someone call them back. In the end, they were so impressed that I went to all the extra effort that they said to forget about it. They also told my German friend who translated for me that they had a much better opinion about Americans because of my actions. Never know what might lead to better foreign relations...
